  • Man sentenced for offensive communication about former Agsi chief in Westmeath Public order (threatening or grossly offensive communication with intent to cause harm) · Co. Westmeath

Andrew McGovern, 38, of Rathowen, Co Westmeath, pleaded guilty to distributing or publishing a threatening or grossly offensive communication about Antoinette Cunningham with intent to cause harm, after posting five private and two public messages on Twitter, now X, between 16 and 30 March 2023 in the Mullingar area. Cunningham, from Limerick, was the first woman to lead a Garda staff association and served as Agsi general secretary at the time of the offence. McGovern entered his guilty plea in November 2024, missed a March 2025 sentencing hearing prompting a bench warrant, and was remanded on continuing bail in July 2025. On 4 September 2025, Judge Bernadette Owens at Mullingar District Court sentenced him to 10 months' imprisonment with the final three months suspended on condition he did not reoffend for two years.
