On 18 May 2024 a 55-year-old man, Anthony Smyth, was involved in a collision at Feede, Dundalk, Co. Louth, while driving south on the N1 between Junctions 20 and 19, and his ex-partner, a woman, was injured. His ex-partner told gardaí she believed he had deliberately driven into the back of a lorry to kill her, while he claimed he had dropped a lit cigarette in the footwell and bent to retrieve it. He was sentenced at Dundalk Circuit Court for dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm, with a charge of endangerment taken into consideration, and received four years in prison, a five-year driving ban, and a total sentence of five and a half years backdated to 18 May 2024 with the final 18 months suspended. A report published on 5 August 2025 said he had been jailed the previous week.
