Aoife Lynch, a 22-year-old woman, was groomed and sexually assaulted by Anthony Smith, a 45-year-old man from Rathgillen, Nobber, County Meath, when she was 14 and babysat for him. Smith pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation, and was sentenced to five years' imprisonment with three suspended by Judge Patrick Quinn at Trim Circuit Criminal Court on 9 March 2021. The DPP appealed the sentence as unduly lenient, and the Court of Appeal overturned it, ruling that Smith should serve three years with two suspended.
