Charles Farrell, 66, of Skreen, Co Sligo, pleaded guilty at Sligo District Court to two charges of demanding money with menaces. In August 2017, Farrell was driving a car in a road traffic accident in which his two passengers, John Connolly and Anthony Kearns, were injured. In February 2021, Farrell phoned both men, shouting and referring to a firearm and cartridges, demanding a percentage of their insurance compensation claims. Both men complained to gardaí, and three legally held firearms were seized from Farrell's home, with his licences subsequently revoked. Judge Brendan O'Reilly adjourned the case to 25 January 2024 for a probation report, noting the court was open to hearing proposals for appropriate compensation.
