latest first- 75-year-old pensioner jailed for identity fraud in Donegal Benefit fraud (identity fraud)
Aidan Byrne, a 75-year-old pensioner and native of Wexford living in Glenties, Donegal, used the identity of his deceased brother Anthony Joseph Byrne to claim over €93,000 in social welfare benefits, including pension, fuel allowances, medical card treatments, and a passport, between 2011 and 2021. The fraud came to light in 2019 when passport office staff noticed identical photos on two applications and passed the information to the Department of Social Protection and gardaí. Byrne was charged in July 2022 at Glenties District Court and later pleaded guilty to theft, forgery, and using a false instrument at Donegal Circuit Court. In May 2023, he was sentenced to two and a half years in jail.
