  Anthony Casey, a 45-year-old man of No Fixed Abode, was found hunched over and unsteady on his feet at Portlaoise Train Station, Laois, at about 12.45pm on 11 February 2026, and €20 worth of drugs was found on him when he was searched. He had served a life sentence for a murder committed in 1997 and was on temporary release at the time. He was arrested and returned to custody the following day, then appeared at Portlaoise District Court, where he admitted being intoxicated in public and possessing the drugs. The judge noted his guilty plea, marked the drugs charge proven before it was struck out, and fined him €75 for being intoxicated in public, as reported on 21 March 2026.
