Brian Fortune, an 18-year-old farm worker, was convicted in 1986 of the murder of 64-year-old woman Margaret Nolan at her farmhouse in Kilbride, Co Wicklow, on 27 November 1985. Her daughter Anne Nolan, 24, was also killed at the property, though Fortune was never sentenced for her death following a plea agreement. Inquests found both women died from asphyxia caused by strangulation. Fortune was released from Arbour Hill Prison in Dublin in October 2024 after serving 38 years, following a parole board decision.
