  • Man arrested in Tallaght over SIM-swapping fraud and money laundering Money laundering; fraud (SIM-swapping and account take-overs) · Co. Dublin

A 27-year-old man was arrested in Tallaght, Dublin, on 25 August 2022 as part of a Garda National Economic Crime Bureau investigation into SIM-swapping, account takeover and money laundering that caused a commercial bank to lose approximately €200,000 from dozens of customer accounts. The gang hacked bank accounts online, contacted phone shop employees to obtain SIM cards with the same number as the account holder but on a different provider, and accessed the accounts when the bank sent a new password by text. The man was detained at Clondalkin Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 before being released without charge, with a file being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. A related suspect, Ani Enabulele, a man aged 25 from Letterkenny, was charged with 185 offences and jailed for three years in July 2022 at Letterkenny Circuit Court, and the arrested man is suspected of having a more senior role in the criminal organisation.
