Two young men local to Portlaoise were assaulted by a group of up to three people on the green near the basketball courts in the Kilminchy housing estate, Portlaoise, on Sunday afternoon, 30 October 2022. One victim was struck on the head with a pick axe handle, suffering a fractured skull, and another received a fractured arm; both were taken by ambulance to hospital in Tullamore. Gardaí appealed for information about a black car believed to have brought the assailants to the scene. In September 2023, books of evidence were served on Darren Coss, 34, and Andrew Murphy, 29, each accused of assault causing harm, and Judge Andrew Cody sent the case forward for trial to Portlaoise Circuit Court, sitting 24 October 2023.
