Andrew Cooper, a 28-year-old man from Dundalk, was stopped by gardaí on Castle Road, Dundalk, on 14 May 2021 while driving a red Volkswagen Jetta, and three quantities of cocaine worth just under €1,000 were recovered from the car. He admitted unlawful possession of cocaine for sale or supply and possession of benzocaine giving rise to the inference of a drug trafficking offence, and was also convicted of driving without insurance. At sentencing in July 2022, Judge Eirinn McKiernan imposed a four-month sentence for the sale and supply offence, with no driving ban imposed due to his employment. An appeal was subsequently lodged.
