Alexandru Robert Olteanu, a 25-year-old Romanian man of no fixed abode in Ireland, was arrested at Dublin Airport on Friday evening, 4 February 2022, on foot of a European Arrest Warrant after being detained in Romania in January 2022. He is accused of money laundering and setting up bogus companies as part of a criminal organisation involved in fraudulent selling on second-hand websites across Europe, which is estimated to have stolen over €22 million from victims up to the end of 2020. He was charged at Bridewell Garda Station with 26 offences, including 11 counts of money laundering totalling €250,000, 14 counts of using false identity documents to set up companies, and one charge of theft of €400. He appeared before Judge Gráinne Malone at the Criminal Courts of Justice on 5 February 2022, where the DPP directed trial on indictment. He was remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison pending preparation of a book of evidence.
