A doctor in Dublin nearly lost €18,000 in pension funds in an email misdirection scam when he mistakenly believed he was replying to his pension broker. Alexander Cribbin, a 21-year-old man from Clondalkin, Dublin, was the owner of the bank account into which the money was transferred after being contacted via Snapchat by an unknown person who told him his account would be used. Cribbin was in Paris at the time and did not spend the funds, allowing the bank to recall the full amount. He pleaded guilty to possession of the proceeds of criminal conduct on 1 November 2019 and received a deferred sentence of six months' good behaviour. He was discharged from the indictment after abiding by the deferral conditions.
