On 8 March 2019, Albert Crowley, a 68-year-old man and family friend, raped a woman who was then 23 while she was asleep at his home in Dublin 6. Crowley pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to a rape charge and five sexual assault charges. In March 2023 a jury convicted him on all charges after a seven-day trial. On 31 July 2023 he was sentenced to six years, with the final six months suspended for two years on condition he engage with the Probation Service.
