Alan Yip, a 47-year-old British man from Parnell Street, Dublin, pleaded guilty to six counts of providing false or misleading information to a registrar between August 2012 and July 2015, in which he was registered as the father of six children at Civic Registration Offices in Drogheda, Tullamore and Dublin. The scheme, in which mothers who had come to Ireland on student visas paid between €8,000 and €15,000 for their children's passports, was uncovered in 2020 when a couple reported Yip's false registration to officials. The Garda National Immigration Bureau reviewed the births, and in November 2022 Judge Martin Nolan sentenced Yip to three years in prison while each of the six co-accused parents received a two-year term suspended in full.
