  Alan Maher, reported as 37 in one article and 38 in another, was charged with stealing a bottle of pink gin valued at €20.99 from Aldi on Athlone Road, Longford, shortly before 9pm on 27 June 2023. Sergeant Mark Mahon told the court that Maher passed all points of payment, initially refused to hand the gin back to a security guard, and was later tracked down and arrested. By late October 2023 Maher had pleaded guilty to shoplifting at Longford District Court, where Judge Bernadette Owens warned him and adjourned the case for a community service assessment, and on 16 February 2024 he was also charged with public intoxication on Earl Street, Longford. The latest development, reported on 5 March 2024, is that Maher was given the benefit of the Probation Act under section 1.2 at Longford District Court.
