Between 22 March 2021 and later transfers, fraudulent emails sent to a company in South Korea led to funds being moved into two bank accounts held by Alan Kelly, an Irish man aged 30 from Erinagh, Clonlara, Co Clare, with more than €37,500 laundered through them. Interpol agents in Liechtenstein and South Korea flagged the accounts to Gardaí in Limerick, AIB froze one account and recovered €6,074.60, and Kelly was arrested on suspicion of money laundering. He pleaded guilty to two money laundering offences and was sentenced at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court to two 18-month sentences to run concurrently, with Judge Colin Daly describing him as a low-level money mule. Reports of the sentencing were published between 26 February and 7 March 2025.
