On 19 November 2019, Evan Toomey, then 27, drove a Mazda 6 into a stationary Garda patrol vehicle at the Clonmacken Roundabout, Condell Road, Limerick, during a high-speed pursuit, seriously injuring Garda Alan Griffin and Garda Niall Deegan. Toomey was under the influence of cocaine and cannabis and was carrying approximately €3,000 worth of drugs at the time. He pleaded guilty to criminal damage with intent to endanger life, dangerous driving, and possession of cocaine and cannabis at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court in October 2023. He was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment with the final 12 months suspended, along with concurrent sentences for drug offences and a 20-year driving disqualification. • Appeal court reserves judgment in Limerick perverting the course of justice case Perverting the course of justice (alleged) · Co. Limerick

Four Limerick gardaí, Paul Baynham, Alan Griffin, Niall Deegan and John Shanahan, were suspended in November 2020 over investigations into the alleged squaring of fixed charge penalty notices by a superintendent. The four, all from the Roads Policing Unit at Henry Street, deny any wrongdoing and say they have never been arrested or charged. They brought separate High Court judicial review cases in 2023 challenging their continued suspensions, and in July 2024 the Court of Appeal heard Baynham's appeal, with the three judges reserving their judgment. The investigation is being led by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and files are with the Director of Public Prosecutions awaiting a decision on prosecutions.
