Alan Callaghan, a 46-year-old Irish man from Newport, Co Mayo, was struck by a car and killed at Doonagh in Keel, Achill, Co Mayo, at approximately 3:15 am on Monday 25 July 2022. He had been visiting Ireland from San Francisco, where he lived with his wife Sharon and two sons, and had left a social gathering to go for a walk in the dark. A man known to him, who had gone to look for him in a car, was the driver. The body was removed to Mayo University Hospital, and Gardaí launched a witness appeal while preserving the scene for Forensic Collision Investigators. Gardaí are treating the fatal collision as a tragic accident, believing Alan either deliberately lay down on the road as a prank or suddenly came out in front of the car.
