  Akbar Moqadar (36), an Afghan man, was convicted of one count of oral rape of a woman with an intellectual disability in a steam room at a swimming pool in Co Clare. Sources differ on whether the incident took place in August 2022 or whether that is the date of conviction. He was convicted after a Central Criminal Court trial in December 2025 and continues to maintain his innocence. On 2 March 2026 Judge Patrick McGrath sentenced him to seven years, with the final 12 months suspended for three years on strict conditions, backdated to December 2025, though some reports say six years. TD Ken O'Flynn has since said he will raise the reduced sentence, because of the offender's nationality, with the Minister for Justice.
