Martin O'Brien, 54, of Gurrane, Belclare, Tuam, Co Galway, pleaded guilty to four charges of sexual assault on Áine McHugh, a teenage babysitter aged 16 to 17, on dates between June 2012 and February 2014. The assaults took place in two different local pubs after O'Brien would stay up chatting to the teenager and give her alcohol. In December 2024, Mr Justice Naidoo sentenced O'Brien to six and a half years in prison, with the final six months suspended on conditions including 12 months of engagement with the Probation Service. O'Brien has a previous conviction for multiple sexual assault offences against a 10-year-old child, which is under appeal. The victim, who waived her anonymity, described O'Brien as a sexual predator with animalistic behaviour.
