  • Man's sentence doubled on appeal for rape of daughter in Galway Rape; sexual assault; producing child pornography · Co. Galway

Michael O'Donoghue, 43, a man from Ballinasloe, Galway, pleaded guilty to raping and sexually assaulting his daughter Aimee Foley, 20, a woman, over a six-year period between April 2012 and April 2018 during access visits to his home, where he gave her drugs and alcohol before abusing her and on one occasion filmed the abuse on his mobile phone. The abuse came to light in 2020 when the victim confided in college friends and her mother, and O'Donoghue turned himself into gardaí before they had interviewed her. He was originally sentenced in October 2021 to seven years with the final two years suspended, backdated to 14 April 2021. The DPP appealed the leniency, and on 21 October 2022 the Court of Appeal quashed the sentence and imposed 10 years with the final six months suspended for five years, backdated to 14 April 2021.
