latest first- High Court upholds natural causes verdict in baby death in Cork Death (natural causes) · Co. Cork
Natasha Cummins gave birth to Tommy Spencer at University Hospital Waterford on 14 July 2018, and the baby was moved to Cork University Hospital where life support was turned off on 18 July 2018. The couple alleged that excessive contractions and continued use of oxytocin during labour contributed to the baby's death. An inquest jury returned a verdict of death by natural causes on 10 September 2020. The couple sought judicial review, claiming the coroner did not adequately direct the jury on the use of oxytocin. On 15 November 2022, the High Court refused the application, finding the inquest was conducted appropriately.
