On Tuesday 19 September 2023, gardaí stopped a car on the R445 near Emo, County Laois, as part of Operation Tara and seized cannabis herb, cocaine and a small amount of ecstasy, with the total value reported as over €60,000 or €67,500. Two men in their 20s were arrested and detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. Aidan Roarke, 23, with an address in Moate, County Westmeath, was charged and appeared before Portlaoise District Court on 21 September 2023, where he is accused of possession of cannabis for sale or supply and charged with possession of cocaine and MDMA. He was granted bail with agreed conditions and the case was put back to Portlaoise District Court on 15 January for DPP directions, while the second man arrested was released without charge.
