On 13 May 2025, Patrick Connolly, 67, and his wife Bernie Connolly, 64, of Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, captured their neighbour Agnieszka Krajewska's cat, placed it in a white bag, and left it at Creevy Lake, where it was found three days later in poor condition but alive. The couple initially denied knowledge of the cat but made admissions after CCTV footage was obtained following a search of their property. They pleaded guilty at Monaghan District Court to animal cruelty and stealing the cat. Judge Raymond Finnegan sentenced both to three months' imprisonment for animal cruelty, with the theft charge taken into consideration, and granted leave to appeal with €250 recognisances.
