  • Brady's perverting the course of justice sentence increased in Louth Perverting the course of justice · Co. Louth

Aaron Brady, 35, from Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, was convicted in August 2020 of murdering Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe during a robbery at Lordship Credit Union, Bellurgan, Co Louth, on 25 January 2013, and sentenced to life imprisonment with a 40-year minimum. During his 2020 murder trial, Brady recorded a Garda interview with witness Ronan Flynn and posted it on social media, and conspired with Dean Byrne, 33, from Dublin, to persuade prosecution witness Daniel Cahill not to give evidence. Brady pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice at the Special Criminal Court in April 2024 and was sentenced to three years in July 2024, while Byrne was convicted of the conspiracy and sentenced to two years. In July 2026, the Court of Appeal increased Brady's sentence to five years, finding the original three-year term too lenient and failing to give sufficient weight to general deterrence.

  • Supreme Court in Dublin to hear perverting course of justice appeal Conspiracy to pervert the course of justice · Co. Dublin

Dean Byrne, 33, of Cabra Park, Phibsborough, Dublin, was convicted in June 2024 of conspiring with Aaron Brady, 35, to persuade prosecution witness Daniel Cahill not to give evidence at Brady's trial for the 2013 murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe at Lordship Credit Union, Bellurgan, Co Louth. The alleged conspiracy took place in Mountjoy Prison between 8 April and 22 June 2020, during which Byrne is said to have shared photographs of Cahill's statement with relatives and recruited family members to pressure the witness. Brady was convicted of murder in August 2020 and sentenced to life with a 40-year minimum, while Byrne received a two-year sentence in July 2024. The Court of Appeal dismissed Byrne's appeal in December 2025, and the Supreme Court will now hear his challenge on the legal question of whether it can ever be lawful to persuade a witness not to give evidence.

  • Supreme Court orders retrial over conspiracy to steal car in Louth Conspiracy to steal a car · Co. Louth

On 25 January 2013, Aaron Brady shot and killed Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe during a robbery at Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan, Co Louth, in which €7,000 belonging to Pat Bellew was stolen, with a Volkswagen Passat stolen from Clogherhead, Co Louth used as the getaway car. James Flynn, a man with an address in Newry, Co Down, was extradited from the UK in 2022 and tried at the Special Criminal Court, where he was acquitted of the robbery but convicted on an amended charge of conspiring to steal the Passat and sentenced to eight years in December 2023. The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in March 2025, finding the post-trial amendment of the indictment breached his right to constitutional natural justice. The Supreme Court in October 2026 dismissed Flynn's appeal on the substantive issues but directed a retrial on the amended indictment.
