On January 1, 2024, at around 8.45pm, a car carrying four people left the M7 between junction 12 Newbridge and junction 13 Kildare, struck a bank, and ended up on its roof. Passenger Keith Higginbotham, 27, a father of two from Nurney, Kildare, died in the crash, which was the first fatal road accident of 2024. Driver Adam Maher, 27, was badly injured and spent four days in hospital. Maher was charged with alleged dangerous driving causing death and driving under the influence of cocaine, and was sent forward for trial to Naas Circuit Court in November 2024.
