latest first- Man sentenced for fraud over students' college fees in Dublin Fraud (theft of students' college fees) · Co. Dublin
Raul Rodriguez Ramirez, a 36-year-old Mexican man, pleaded guilty in December 2023 to defrauding 18 foreign language students of almost €30,000 in college fees at his Dublin agency Travel Now between June 2020 and June 2021. He used the students' money to fund a Mexican restaurant in Dublin that failed during the pandemic instead of booking their language courses. Sentencing was adjourned in December 2023 to allow him time to repay the students, during which he provided a total of €18,050. On 27 June 2024, Judge Orla Crowe at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment with the final nine months suspended, ordering the repaid sum to be divided pro rata among the 18 victims.
