On 28 July 2023 at 3.45am, gardaí stopped a car driven by Aaron McNutt, a man from Fanad in Donegal, at a routine checkpoint on College Road in Letterkenny and found a handgun, a pistol, five rifles, a sword and an axe in the boot. The case came before Letterkenny District Court in September 2024, where Judge Eiteain Cunningham refused jurisdiction, and in December 2024 the DPP decided that McNutt should stand trial at Letterkenny Circuit Court. McNutt, charged with ten offences, pleaded guilty to all ten before Judge John Aylmer at the Circuit Court by late October 2025. The latest development, reported in December 2025, is that the judge adjourned the case to 9 June 2026 on a condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
