  Sean Beumer, a 29-year-old man, slashed Aaron Babbington, a man in his early 30s, in the throat with a makeshift knife made from a razor blade fixed to a plastic handle in the smoking area of Cuan Mhuire addiction treatment centre in Bruree, County Limerick, around 1.30am on 13 December 2019, while both were in a residential alcohol detox programme. Beumer was charged with assault causing harm and producing a bladed weapon and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court. A jury unanimously found him not guilty by reason of insanity, and Judge Colin Daly ordered a medical report on his mental health within 14 days following assessment at the Central Mental Hospital.
