Woman sentenced to community service over bank account used in Dundalk smishing scam

On 23 September 2021 a man with a Bank of Ireland account in Dundalk, Co Louth, received a text message purporting to be from his bank, clicked a link, and was asked for his account code, after which €18,000 in his account was cleared out. The transfers were routed through the account of Fiona Preda, a 26-year-old woman, who had given her bank card to a friend who said the money was for Christmas; the victim complained at a garda station within an hour. Preda pleaded guilty to a money laundering offence at Dundalk Circuit Court and was sentenced to 160 hours community service, to be completed over 18 months, in lieu of a 16-month sentence. The sentencing was reported on 3 March 2026, which is the latest development.
