Case No. 16832Insurance fraud · Co. Dublin · 4 Feb 2013

Woman given suspended sentence over staged crash insurance fraud

Ann Wilson, 44, admitted fraudulently claiming over €35,000 from insurer AXA after a staged low-speed collision at the Ballycullen Roundabout, Woodstown, south Dublin, on 4 February 2013. Gardaí were not told of the crash, and AXA found on social media that the parties in both cars knew each other. Wilson pleaded guilty to one count of dishonestly inducing AXA to pay a personal injuries claim, and her partner Thomas O'Neill, 47, was sentenced to two years in prison in May 2024, while Deirdre Mellor had earlier received a suspended two-year sentence. On 26 June 2024 Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Wilson to three years in prison, suspended in full, because of her parental responsibilities for her son.
