Witness insists evidence was true after judge rejects his account in Regency trial of Jason Bonney

David Byrne was shot dead in the lobby of the Regency Hotel in Dublin on 5 February 2016. Jason Bonney, listed as 50 in a photo caption, was tried at the Special Criminal Court for facilitating the murder by using his black BMW X5 to pick up one of the hit team. Witness Peter Tyrell said he saw Bonney's late father Willie driving the BMW minutes after the murder, and Julie McGlynn said she saw Bonney at her mother's home that day, but Ms Justice Tara Burns rejected both accounts and said the court had been lied to in the most malevolent manner. Bonney was found guilty, and on 5 May 2023 Tyrell insisted he did not lie, saying "I know what I saw"; Bonney is due to be sentenced the following Monday.
