West Cork murder under investigation as Gardaí seek international DNA match

Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a 39-year-old French filmmaker, was beaten to death at her holiday home in Toormore, outside Schull, West Cork, on the night of 22 December 1996. English man Ian Bailey, 66, was twice arrested but never charged in Ireland, and was convicted in absentia by a Paris court in May 2019 and sentenced to 25 years, though Irish courts refused to extradite him. A Garda cold case review was launched in 2022, and in October 2024 officers seized an unedited podcast recording of Bailey, who has since died. As of May 2026, Gardaí are seeking international help under the Prum Convention to identify DNA found on one of the victim's boots.
