Uninsured motorist jailed and banned from driving for 10 years, Longford
Joe Mears was stopped by Garda John Hanley in the Chapel Lane area of Longford town on 17 July 2023. He claimed to hold a UK licence, but the court heard it was not valid. On 30 September 2023 Garda Hanley pursued him in the Oakvale area after he allegedly sped off, and no valid insurance documents were produced. He was arrested on 25 August 2025 for a Section 6 public order offence and has been in custody since November 2025 after failing to appear in court. Reported on 2 February 2026, Judge Bernadette Owens sentenced him to 10 months in prison, to run concurrently with his existing sentence, and banned him from driving for 10 years after he pleaded guilty to driving without insurance or a driving licence.
