Truck driver jailed for incitement to hatred over refugee livestream

On 30 January 2023 Graham Carey, a 42-year-old truck driver from Finglas, Dublin, broadcast a 30-minute Instagram livestream in which he called refugees 'rape-ugees', threatened to throw 'their bleeding corpses into the sea', and urged people to gather at Finglas Garda Station. The broadcast followed a local woman's allegation that a refugee had sexually assaulted her, though the alleged assault was later said to have been carried out by a white local man. Carey was arrested and charged under the 1989 Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act and pleaded not guilty, and in April 2026 a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court unanimously found him guilty on both counts. Reporting in October 2026 said he had been jailed for two years, made up of 18 months on each count to run consecutively with the final year suspended.
