Truck driver Graham Carey to be sentenced over 'rape-ugees' Instagram livestream

Graham Carey, a 42-year-old truck driver from Finglas, Dublin, made a 30-minute Instagram livestream on 30 January 2023 in which he referred to refugees as 'rape-ugees' and threatened to throw their bleeding corpses into the sea, in the days following an allegation of sexual assault by a refugee. He was charged under the 1989 Prohibition of Incitement to Hatred Act with using words intended to stir up hatred and with distributing a recording likely to stir up hatred. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Carey pleaded not guilty to both counts but a jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts in April 2026. On 24 July 2026, Judge Ryan adjourned sentencing to the following morning, remanded Carey on continuing bail, and rejected his application to vary bail conditions.
