Case No. 29621Rape; sexual assault · Co. Cork · 1 May 2016

Teen sentenced to suspended term for raping niece in Cork

An unnamed 19-year-old man from Munster pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork to seven counts of rape and ten sexual assault offences committed against his niece, who was aged between eight and 11, during the period from May 2016 to April 2019. The youth, who was aged between 14 and 17 at the time, also pleaded guilty to sending lewd texts to the girl and threatened to do to her younger sister what he was doing to her. Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy imposed a five-year suspended sentence, ordering the youth to be supervised by the Probation Service, to undergo a psychiatric assessment exploring a possible autism diagnosis, and to avoid being in the company of children unsupervised or near the victim. Mary Crilly, Director of the Cork Sexual Violence Centre, criticised the sentence and called for mandatory sentences in child sexual abuse cases.
