Teen charged with dangerous driving causing death of Johnny Foley in Mitchelstown crash

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was charged over a two-car crash in the early hours of 1 July 2023 near Mitchelstown, Co Cork, in which Johnny Foley, a 16-year-old from Spur Hill, Cork, died and three others were seriously injured. The accused is alleged to have driven the wrong way down a motorway at high speed, and the sources differ on whether it was the M8 or the N8. He was arrested at around 8am on Wednesday and charged with 12 motoring offences at Mallow District Court, where he made no reply under caution. The DPP directed trial by indictment before a judge and jury on the death, serious harm and endangerment charges, and he was remanded in detention at Oberstown and is due back at Mallow District Court by video link on 14 November.
