Taxi driver sentenced for rape of two women in Dublin
Raymond Shorten, a 50-year-old taxi driver, was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court on 14 June 2024 of raping a 19-year-old woman on 26 June 2022 and a 20-year-old woman on 9 August 2022, both in the back of his taxi after nights out in Dublin city centre. He was arrested on 22 August 2022 and pleaded not guilty, claiming the sexual contact was consensual. On 22 July 2024, Mr Justice Paul McDermott sentenced him to 17 years in prison, to be served consecutively to a 13-year sentence for a separate child rape, bringing his total to 30 years. Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said there was a reasonable proposition that Shorten had other victims and urged them to come forward.
