Supreme Court to hear appeal over naming of Cameron Blair's murderer
Cameron Blair, a 20-year-old student, was stabbed in the neck at a house party on the Bandon Road in Cork on January 16th, 2020. A man, then 17, pleaded guilty to his murder at the Central Criminal Court and was sentenced to life detention with a review after 13 years. In January 2023, after he had turned 18, the Court of Appeal dismissed his sentence appeal and held that media could identify an accused who turns 18 during proceedings, a ruling whose effects were later paused pending appeal. In April 2024 the Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal against that ruling, which is the latest development.
