Supreme Court dismisses Regency Hotel murder facilitation appeal in Dublin

David Byrne, 33, was shot dead during a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in Whitehall, Dublin 9, on 5 February 2016, when five men, three disguised as armed gardaí carrying AK-47 assault rifles, stormed the building. Gerard Hutch, 59, of Clontarf, Dublin, was tried at the Special Criminal Court for the murder and acquitted in April 2023, while co-accused Jason Bonney, 52, of Portmarnock, and Paul Murphy, 61, of Swords, were convicted of facilitating the Hutch criminal organisation by providing getaway vehicles and sentenced to eight-and-a-half and nine years respectively in May 2023. Jonathan Dowdall, 44, a former Sinn Féin councillor, pleaded guilty to facilitating the murder by making a hotel room available and was jailed for four years in October 2022. The Court of Appeal rejected Bonney and Murphy's conviction appeals in November 2025 and their sentence appeals in July 2026, and the Supreme Court dismissed Bonney's further appeal on his conviction in July 2026.
