Case No. 20470Sexual assault · Co. Dublin

Student sentenced over sexual abuse of half-sister at Central Criminal Court

An 18-year-old man, a Leaving Certificate student who cannot be named, was convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court in December 2022 of five counts of sexual assault against his half-sister, a girl aged between eight and 11 at the time, while he was aged 12 to 15. The offending took place between July 2016 and November 2019 at the victim's home in Dublin and at a restaurant, and came to light in December 2019 after the girl told her father. The jury found him not guilty of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault, and a sentencing hearing in February was adjourned so he could sit his Leaving Certificate exams. In July 2023 he was given a two-year sentence with the final 12 months suspended, with two years' Probation Service supervision after release; the Irish Times headline says he was jailed for one year, and he continues to deny the offending.
