Case No. 1263Manslaughter · Co. Dublin · 20 Jul 2017

Sentence appeal dismissed in Coolock manslaughter case

Martin Hayes, a 34-year-old man (reports also give his age as 36), was convicted of manslaughter after a Central Criminal Court jury found him not guilty of murdering his partner Amadea McDermott, 27, in an 11-1 majority verdict on 13 November 2023. McDermott died from a single stab wound to the abdomen at the couple's home on Rathvale Drive, Ayrfield, Coolock, Dublin, in the early hours of 20 July 2017. Hayes, who pleaded not guilty to murder, told the court his partner had stabbed herself, but the judge found the killing was an act of domestic violence and an aggravating factor. He was sentenced to 12 years and six months with no portion suspended on 28 November 2023, and the Court of Appeal dismissed both his conviction appeal in May 2025 and his sentence appeal in July 2025.
