Second man signs guilty plea over Carrigaholt Post Office robbery

On January 21, 2026, cash, coins and a cheque worth €8,944.63 were taken from post-mistress Maura McKiernan at Carrigaholt Post Office in west Clare, in a robbery that gardaí believe was carried out by a four-person joint enterprise. Four men have been charged: Darren Cassidy (38), Darragh Pender (30), Martin Downes (36) and Michael McMahon (38). Cassidy signed a guilty plea to the robbery the week before June 17, 2026, and Pender signed a guilty plea at Ennis District Court on June 17, 2026, with his dangerous driving charges adjourned to October and his plea to be affirmed in the circuit court later. Downes has been on remand at Limerick prison since January 23, 2026, and his solicitor says he was assaulted there, while McMahon was further remanded in custody for the serving of a Book of Evidence.
