Retrial set for man whose Louth murder conviction was quashed
Cameron Reilly, an 18-year-old DKIT student, was found dead in a field at Shamrock Hill, Dunleer, Co Louth on 26 May 2018 after socialising with a group of about 15 young people the previous night. Aaron Connolly, now 26, was charged with murder, with the prosecution alleging he asphyxiated Reilly between 12.40am and 1.40am. Connolly was found guilty by a unanimous jury in December 2022 and sentenced to life imprisonment. The Court of Appeal quashed the conviction in May 2026, finding the trial judge's charge to the jury lacked balance, and ordered a retrial. The retrial is set for 23 November 2026 at the Central Criminal Court.
