Retired garda further charged with conspiracy in corruption probe

John Murphy, aged 65, a retired garda superintendent, and Aidan Stratford have been further charged with conspiring with a detective to induce people by deception to part with money, under section 71 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, as part of a corruption probe by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Dublin. The alleged offences are said to have run from the start of 2018 until the end of the following year. The Bureau has brought 189 charges against four remaining defendants, and the case, still at pre-trial stage, resumed at Dublin District Court on 11 September 2026, when the single charge against Detective Inspector Brian Roberts was withdrawn. The new charge required the High Court to grant bail to Murphy and Stratford, who were held at court. Murphy and Stratford will next appear at the District Court on 6 November.
