Case No. 6617Dangerous dog (alleged) · Co. Dublin · 17 Jan 2023

Prisoner fails to secure release of dog that allegedly bit garda

On 17 January 2023 in Dublin, Kevin O'Keeffe, of Oliver Bond Flats in Dublin 2, was arrested at his home on a bench warrant, and his dog Cleo allegedly bit a garda during the arrest. Cleo was seized and placed in professionally operated kennels, and a garda complaint under the Control of Dogs Act 1986 sought her destruction. The District Court refused an adjournment and ordered destruction within two days, but O'Keeffe's High Court challenge led to a rehearing being ordered, and the High Court kept Cleo in kennels, refusing release to his cousin. The latest development, reported on 3 February 2024, is that the Court of Appeal dismissed O'Keeffe's appeal against the detention order, and the destruction application is to be reheard in the District Court.
