Case No. 18075Fraud · Co. Louth

Pastor sentenced for social welfare fraud at Dundalk court

Christian Bona, a 53-year-old Irish man and church pastor from Ardee, Louth, obtained €29,000 in social welfare payments he was not entitled to while absent from the State between March 2015 and July 2016. The fraud was discovered when one of his brothers attempted to sign-on in his name at the Ardee civic offices, and CCTV showed his two brothers, non-Irish men Ciprian Bonescu, 44, and Daniel Bonescu, 49, collecting payments in his name. Bona was originally charged with 56 counts of theft of job seekers allowance and one back to school allowance claim, and pleaded guilty to 10 sample counts at Dundalk Circuit Court. In February 2024, Judge Dara Hayes sentenced him to two years and three months, suspended for five years, with €19,893 still outstanding in repayments.
