Murder of Garda McCabe in Adare under investigation 30 years on
On 7 June 1996, Detective Garda Jerry McCabe, 53, an Irish man from Co Kerry, and his colleague Detective Garda Ben O'Sullivan, an Irish man, were escorting a post office cash van carrying £81,000 through Adare, Co Limerick, when a Provisional IRA gang rammed their unmarked patrol car and occupants of a second vehicle opened fire, killing McCabe and seriously wounding O'Sullivan. Four men were charged with murder and attempted murder, but their pleas to manslaughter were accepted by the State in 1999, and John Quinn was jailed for six years for conspiracy to rob the van. The four were released after serving their sentences, while two further suspects remain unaccounted for, living in Europe and Central America. Pearse McAuley, one of the four convicted, was found dead at his home in Strabane, Co Tyrone, in March 2024, and O'Sullivan died in 2022, aged 78. The investigation was confirmed as still live at the 30th anniversary commemoration in June 2026.
