Case No. 0177Murder · Co. Dublin · 29 Jul 2022

Mountjoy murder appeal reserved at Court of Appeal

Robert O'Connor, 34, died from blunt force trauma to the head after being beaten and kicked in a cell at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin on 29 July 2022. David Dunne, 40, a fellow inmate, was arrested in November 2022 and charged with murder, pleading not guilty at his trial at the Central Criminal Court. A jury unanimously convicted Dunne in November 2024, and Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring imposed a mandatory life sentence in December 2024. Dunne has since appealed his conviction at the Court of Appeal, arguing the jury may have misunderstood the law on intent, and the court has reserved judgment.
